This article is designed to make you understand about how to leverage the functionality of cookies to store the name of the visitor, and then utilize this stored value to pass to the GA server and records journey of the visitors.

Once you enter your name in the box here, it will stored in the browser based cookie within your computer. This cookie is designed to last for 30 days, until you decide to delete cookies from yourself. So, once you enter your name, and click on Store Name button, we will remember your name for next 30 days, and then on, whatever you do on this blog, will be tracked corresponding to your name. Next time when you come on our blog, you need not enter your name, your name will be retrieved from the cookie, and it will be passed on to GA server, which can be verified from HHTP Fox tool, explained in prior post here

This kind of functionality can come in real handy when you want to remember user's login ID/Username for sometime, so that even when he doesn't log in the next time, his/her name can be tracked and the visitor journey can be matched with the name of the user. For example, once you have entered your name, I can see in my GA reports, how many articles/posts you read on my blog, what posts did you read etc.

I am passing your name in a custom dimension, and records the "read article" action with the help of a custom dimension. What do they mean can be viewed in the subsequent post about the custom dimensions and metrics here
